Hilary Smith, Senior Lecturer
in Playwork, University of GloucestershireHilary’s playwork career began twenty five years’ ago on an open
access adventure playground in Cardiff. Thus ignited, her passion for play took
her to Cheltenham, where, as Play Officer for the Borough Council, she
developed and managed a range of play services including a mobile Playbus and
ten holiday playschemes. In 1998 she began working at the University of
Gloucestershire and her work focus shifted to the development of accessible
training and qualifications to meet the needs of playworkers. Hilary is currently
the course leader on the MA in Professional Studies in Children’s Play and
Senior Lecturer in Playwork. She has contributed to a variety of research
projects and publications relating to play, playwork and pedagogy while
continuing to practise as a playworker.
