Some people have asked me about this ‘commitment’ business – so I am going to try to explain!
The National Playwork Conference has been running since 2000 with a couple of years off due to venue problems. Initially it was the Conference for the Playwork SVQ and NVQ and was financially supported by the then education department.
That funding came to an end but Conference had become an item in the annual calendar of the playwork sector and we kept it going and renamed it the National Playwork Conference.
It never made any money: in fact, year on year it lost money, but as Meynell Games was going strong; the losses of Conference were funded out of the proceeds of training and various other projects including Study Tours.
None of that funding is available any more. So Conference has to pay for itself.
From a one day Conference with 60 people to a two day event with 300; we have welcomed over 2000 different people to the previous twelve Conferences.
Over the years we have offered a variety of discounts, subsidies and bursaries to get as many people as possible to attend: from student bursaries to free places for presenters. Naturally to offset the cheaper fees there have had to be higher delegate fees. This peaked at the last Conference with a full, non discounted, place costing £720 including VAT.
I want to make Conference affordable for everybody as everybody is going to have to pay - including presenters.
The cost of delivering the Conference is in the region of £90,000! I felt that a fee of £225 was reasonable. The delegate package is substantial as it includes everything that is needed for the two days in Eastbourne. [You get two full days at the Conference; bed & breakfast Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and dinner and entertainment at the Annual Playwork Awards presentation.] There is no VAT to pay either!
So with 300 people booking, and some support from sponsors and exhibitors we can make this work!
In order for me to continue to plan Conference I need to know that 300 people want to come. This doesn’t mean that you are making a firm booking – it is you saying: “Yes, I want to be part of Conference. I want Conference to happen and if I possibly can I will be there!”
If I get the 300 commitments then I can start the process of sorting out bookings and payments. This year we can even set up a direct debit/standing order and collect a proportion of the delegate fee each week!
