How do we talk about play?

Eva Kane

Do you ever talk about play? Whether you do or not, come and talk with me about it! I have been talking to school age childcare staff teams in England and in Sweden about it and I am trying to discover what they actually agree on in their teams. You will get a chance to talk as well as listen to what others talk about. I will also try and explain how I go about trying to discover what in our conversations is meaningful to the whole group rather than to individuals.

Playwork – the PHD version

 Shelly  Newstead

This workshop presents some of the issues involved in constructing playwork as a measurable model of practice which is distinct from other ways of working with children. It will ask participants to consider issues of language, quantifiable definitions, and the implications of playwork theory for practice, as well as some of the complexities of operationalising and measuring both play and playwork.

Children’s play, learning & empowerment in 2 after school clubs in West London

Hannah Smith

"empowering the children by listening to them. They may be children but they do think... It’s about the children being able to make their own choices in life and obviously in this context as well…. empowerment to me is making a child feel in control." (Playworker, London)

We will look at some tensions between policy and playwork approaches that I found during my doctorate research in two State-run after school clubs in London. These tensions are partly about ambiguous, contradictory and context specific meanings attached to children and control over their playtime and their futures. I’d like to discuss how expectations and pressures on playworkers in these settings stem from differing ideas about children and childhood. As reflections of particular values and agendas, these are tensions that playworkers negotiate, challenge and defend.
