TRACK 12: Reflective practice  Curated by Ben Tawil

Room 3

I want to use the reflective practice theme to move from introduction to the discipline. The discipline in action at the coal face (as they say) on to improving service delivery and identifying impact through reflective practice as a research tool. And finally to using reflective practice with the public to remind them about play and inform developing strategies for children’s play and playwork provision

An introduction to reflective practice :

Ben Tawil

Why do we think the way we do, why do we respond to certain things differently to others, why do certain events make us feel the way they do, do our perception and prejudices influence our actions and can we suppress them if they do?  Can I work to my principles and work with organisational objectives, questions that all arise when we begin to reflect on our practice. This workshop will provide delegates with the opportunity to take part in an introduction to and interrogation of models of reflective practice, exploring and playing with the phenomena that influence our ability to engage effectively in reflective practice concluding by practicing with a model developed through a synthesis of the material explored in the workshop.

Reflection in and on action

Jacky Kilvington

This workshop will concentrate on two potential points of playworker reflection:
Reflection during process (in action) and reflection after the event (on action) How do we carry out dynamic reflection and adjust our behaviour accordingly? What skills, knowledge and techniques help us with reflection in action? How do we learn from reflecting back on events and how can we monitor the effect that this has on our playwork practice? What skills, knowledge and techniques help us with reflection on action? The workshop will be reflective and participative.

1½ hours : beginner / intermediate : 11:45-13:15

Reflective practice in practice

Jonny  Neen

Jonny's presentation entitled Reflective Practice in Practice, is based upon work carried out in his role as a playwork project coordinator, embedding reflective practice into the work of playworkers and using evidence from this to evaluate provision and its impacts.  The session explores the process of critical reflection, the logistics of data collection and social research theory and analysis. The session is targeted at just about anyone, from those just starting out in playwork to senior playworkers and managers of play provision

Richard Driffield (WCBC Play Development Worker): Telling Stories - based upon the work of the WCBC Play Development Team and their campaign to gather play memories from across the county. The workshop will look at the design and implementation of the campaign, share some of the stories received and encourage participants to consider how this information might be best used to provide evidence in support of playwork
